Lake Sandoval is one of the most iconic natural attractions of the Peruvian Amazon, located within the Tambopata National Reserve, near Puerto Maldonado. Surrounded by pristine rainforest, this stunning oxbow lake is renowned for its exceptional biodiversity and tranquil scenery.
The lake is home to a wide variety of wildlife, including giant river otters, black caimans, turtles, colorful macaws, hoatzins, and numerous species of birds. Its calm waters and lush vegetation make it an ideal destination for nature lovers, wildlife photographers, and travelers seeking an authentic Amazon experience.
Visiting Lake Sandoval offers a unique opportunity to explore the rainforest by canoe, walk through primary jungle trails, and witness unforgettable sunrises and sunsets in a peaceful, untouched environment. It is a must-see destination for anyone wishing to discover the true richness of the Amazon rainforest.
The tour begins at Puerto Capitanía in Puerto Maldonado, where guests board a motorized boat for an approximate 40-minute ride along the Madre de Dios River to reach the Lake Sandoval control entrance, located inside the Tambopata National Reserve.
Upon arrival, visitors register at the control post and then start a guided walk of approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes through primary rainforest. Along the trail, it is common to observe monkeys, birds, and other wildlife, while learning about the local flora and fauna.
At the end of the trail, guests arrive at Lake Sandoval, where they board a traditional rowing canoe to explore the lake. During the canoe excursion, there are excellent opportunities to spot wildlife such as giant river otters, caimans, turtles, and a variety of bird species.
A lunch break is provided in a designated area near the lake, allowing time to rest and enjoy the natural surroundings.
After lunch, the return journey follows the same route, including the canoe crossing, the jungle walk back to the control entrance, and the motorboat transfer back to Puerto Capitanía, concluding the tour.
Fly to Puerto Maldonado, take a boat up the Madre de Dios River, and hike 3 km (approximately 1 hour) through the jungle to reach the lake's shore.
Lightweight, quick-drying clothing, long-sleeved shirts, long pants, hiking boots (or mud boots), insect repellent (with >30% DEET), sunscreen, a flashlight, and binoculars.
The best time to visit Lake Sandoval is during the dry season, which runs from April to October. During these months, rainfall is less frequent, making hiking and boating easier. Additionally, wildlife is usually more active, increasing your chances of sightings.
